Remember that decimal number has base 10 whereas octal number has base 8.

Steps to Convert Decimal Number to Octal numbers

  1. Divide the decimal number by 8.
  2. Collect the remainder
  3. Repeat the step 1 until the dividend is less than 0.

Example of Conversion

Convert the decimal number 1054 to octal.

Solution:

1054 / 8 = 131 – Remainder is 6

131 / 8 = 16 – Remainder is 3

16 / 8 = 2 – Remainder is 0

Finally (1054)10 = (2036)8
