# Formula to convert MV to kV

MV stands for megavolts whereas kV stands for kilovolts. Both of these represent the quantity of voltage with different prefixes. The table below displays the actual value of both.

Value | Prefix | Symbol |
---|---|---|

10^{6} |
mega | M |

10^{3} |
kilo | k |

From this we understand:

1 MV = 10^{6 }V = 10^{3}. 10^{3 }V = 10^{3} kV = 1000 kV

OR 1 MV / 1000 = 1 kV

In simple terms, we can say that 1 MV should be divided by 1000 to obtain 1 kV. You can use this prefix automation calculator to perform the conversions.

2 Methods to do conversions

- Replace M by k and multiply the number by 1000
- Replace M by 10
^{6}and then split it into two 10^{3 }values as we did previously in a step by step manner.

Example 1: Convert 5 MV to kV.

5 MV = 5 * 1000 * kV = 5000 kV

Example 2: Convert 300 MV to kV.

300 MV = 300 * 1000 * kV = 300000 kV
